Fresh Track: Yuck “Chew”

Nothing like a pleasant surprise on a Thursday to provide the necessary motivation to close out an arduous work week. Today, 2011’s buzziest band Yuck surprised fans with their first single of 2012. “Chew” is saturated in the same heavy reverb and distortion that made Yuck’s 2011 debut one of the darling releases of the indie blogosphere. So far this year, the London band has remained content occupying their efforts in side projects (See links below), but it’s great to hear some sounds from the band as a unit.

Yuck will return stateside next week to take part in Indio, CA’s Coachella Music and Arts Festival. Yuck will help kick off the festival’s Friday lineup, with a performance on the Outdoor Theatre stage slated for 3:15 local time next Friday. Those unable to attend need not fret, Yuck’s set will be available for live streaming via Coachella’s Youtube page. Tune in around 6 EST to watch the broadcast.

Fresh Track + Video: Pevin Kinel “Fake ppl”

Pevin Kinel is a French-born independent multi-instrumentalist that currently makes his bed in London. This week, Kinel released the first track from his forthcoming LP Syntactic Sugars, due out June 5. “Fake ppl” lies somewhere between experimental, minimalist think-pop (is that a word?) and the schizophrenic inner ramblings of an eloquent LSD user. Call it what you may, but the song tickles the back of the neck and forces the listener to wonder for a while.

“Fake Ppl” is best served with a decent pair of headphones and an open mind. The video does nothing to tame the peculiarity of the song, but raise your hand if you’re complaining. By the end of this ride, you’ll be wondering where you’ve been for the last two and a half minutes. I’ll be damned if I wasn’t hitting replay the moment it got to the end. In the interest of full disclosure, I’m also a big fan of anyone that switches the first letters in their first and last names. This, in my experience, is a sign of pure genius at that work (case in point: former Butler Bulldog Hatt Moward). Enjoy.

Fresh Track: Friends “Mind Control”

Brooklyn band Friends burst onto the scene in 2011 with 7” singles “Friend Crush” along with “I’m His Girl” and immediately demanded the attention of the greater indie-sphere.   With their upbeat poppy beats and Samantha Urbani’s unique vocals leading the way, the only thing missing was a debut LP.  The wait is no longer. Manifest! drops on June 5th via Fat Possum.  Below you can listen to the first single off the album, a nu-disco funky treat named “Mind Control”.  In case you missed out on our previous coverage of Friends, you check out my review of their live show in Cincinnati the past December featuring a video of their fab cover of the 90’s R&B classic “My Boo
