Band to Watch: Young Magic
Good luck putting a label on New York City’s Young Magic. Singer and producer Isaac Emmanuel began the project during his never-ending voyage of sorts from his Australia across the globe and back again. Emmanuel made a multitude of recordings using whatever instruments presented themselves along the way, crafting a patchwork quilt of sound. In Mexico, he met soon to be band mate Michael Italia, who had been participating in his own global one-man-band approach. After the two finished their trips they decided to reconnect in NYC where they roped in Indonesian vocalist Melati Malay to create Young Magic. After listening to their debut release Melt, it is evident that their influence is pulled from a melting pot of sounds.
Young Magic is for those that embrace echoed vocals mixed with native rhythms. Opening track, “Sparkly” features African style drumming that immediately introduces new listeners to their hybrid sound. On the surface this project comes off as highly experimental, but it is backed by a strong foundation of soul. The textures thicken as a psychedelic, electronic vibe fills out most of their tracks. Locals can absorb the myriad of sounds live and in person as Young Magic is playing in Bloomington on July 26 at the Bishop along with Thought on Tracks favorites Quilt. Cincinnati readers can catch both acts at MOTR Pub on July 27. Until then, listen and watch the video for “Sparkly” below and pick up on the indigenous vibes.

Fresh Track: Little Dragon “Sunshine”
Coming off the heels of a wholeheartedly underrated album in 2011’s Ritual Union, Little Dragon released their first new material late last week. The single is called “Sunshine” and it’s another great effort from the Swedish pop band. Featuring what appears to be a flute supporting a synth-heavy, staccato beat, it’s a smooth, funky little jam that is completely enjoyable. Whether or not this is left over material from the band’s third studio album or something written while on tour, I am an unabashed fan of Yukimi Nagano’s vocal style. Her voice has the edge of a Saturday night to it, and we can only hope more material comes shortly.

Tonight: First Friday music in the Murphy Building
First Fridays have blossomed into some of Indianapolis’ most exciting summer evenings for local art lovers. Originally established to bolster the city’s under-appreciated visual arts scene, First Fridays have grown to encompass a variety musical events as well. Two intriguing offerings will take place at Fountain Square’s Murphy Building this evening.
The new Do317 Lounge will play host to local singer and multi-instrumentalist KO Noel. Formerly of Slothpop, KO has quickly established herself as one of my favorite new Indy artists of 2012. It has been fun to watch her confidence as a solo performer quickly grow since her Record Store Day debut at LUNA Records. Listen to “i will run while it’s dark” for a taste of the sensational vocal loops that will be on display in the intimate new space. The show is free, and Upland Brewery will be on hand serving frothy beverages, and work by local artist Mandy Steinbeck will be on display. Find more info at Do317.
Just down the hall, local label Joyful Noise Recordings will double as a performance space for singer-songwriters Richard Edwards, of Margot and the Nuclear So and Sos, and Adam Kuhn. Edwards always puts on a terrific show. The show will also feature artwork from Kat Johnson. Check out Edwards’ acoustic take on Margot track “New York City Hotel” from 2010 below. Both shows kick off at 8 and space is limited. Visit Do317 for more info on the show.
