Video: Young Man “After Is Always Before” (Lia Ices Cover)

St. Paul, MN native Colin Caulfield writes the kind of sleepy, ethereal songs that dreams are made of. His 2011 LP Ideas of Distance on Frenchkiss Records is as much an experiment in meditation as it is an indie rock release. Instrumental melodies mixed with a heavy dose of distortion break up songs that showcase Caulfield’s soaring vocal range. Known by his stage name, Young Man, Caulfield’s latest effort comes in the form of a cover song. The video features an abridged cover of Lia Ices‘ “After Is Always Before” from her 2011 release Grown Unknown on Bloomington’s Jagjaguwar. Caulfield does the songstress justice, matching her formidable vocal prowess and illusory style. Though the video may lack in visual stimulation, the song is certainly worth a spin.

Blue Moon Revue: New Video + Album Release Party

Indianapolis’ Blue Moon Revue released a hot new video for the track “Lil Momma” off their latest release Phases today. The eye candy comes courtesy of local video gurus Monkey Eats Monkey. The band will be playing at Radio Radio tonight for their 5th Annual Holiday Extravaganza. In the past, BMR has filled up venues in the Broad Ripple area for one of the Christmas season’s best parties. This marks the first time the event will be held in Fountain Square.

This year’s holiday show will also serve as an album release party. BMR is sounding as good as ever at the moment. The band has been steadily sharpening their sound at Alan Johnson’s Static Shack Studios. Johnson is a seasoned studio veteran, who is responsible for Bob and Tom’s extensive catalog of albums. On top of recording and mixing Phases, Johnson has had BMR rehearsing into the wee hours for weeks. The hard work and long rehearsals should make for a terrific show at Radio Radio tonight. Cover for the event is $6, or $3 with a canned food donation for Gleaners Food Bank. Fellow Indy natives Genius Johnson will be on hand to lend support. Come out and support great local music tonight, and witness a band that is coming into their own.

Video: Kisses “Bermuda”

The stretch from Indianapolis to Cincinnati isn’t long, but hung over, it certainly isn’t very enjoyable.  On my way home from a rendezvous with old friends the evening prior; I decided to go the Shuffle route to get me home.  The first song up happened to be from Kisses, the new-disco duo composed of Jesse Kivel and girlfriend Zinzi Edmundson.  The duo released their first self-titled EP in late 2010, and really, it’s an album that I overlooked throughout much of 2011.  Described by me as beach disco, it’s a dance album of songs that sound sadder than you’d expect.  Below you’ll find a video of the two performing “Bermuda” acoustically along with the original album version.  Which do you prefer?
