Fresh Track: The Wailin’ Smithers “Ocean Song” (demo)

The Wailin’ Smithers is a new band from Bloomington, IN. Yesterday, the band released a demo of their latest track “Ocean Song.”  The track is immediately reminiscent of Albert Hammond Jr.’s solo work on his underrated 2006 LP Yours to Keep. The Wailin’ Smithers have just a handful of shows under their belt, mostly house parties and a few opening spots at The Bishop. The band has written an album’s worth of material, and hopes to enter the studio soon. For now, listen and download “Ocean Song” below. Don’t miss out on a free download of their debut single “Over and Over”, released in November of last year.

Video: Bowerbirds “Sweet Moment”

Raleigh, NC’s Bowerbirds released an impossibly cute video for their track “Sweet Moment” today. The track appears on Bowerbirds latest album, The Clearing, released in March. The video features a young girl ditching, what appears to be, the trek to college for a cross-country road trip with her boyfriend. The footage fits nicely with the song’s Buddhist notion of living in the present. Grab your copy of The Clearing from Dead Oceans.

Fresh Track: Cozy “Cola Shock Kids”

Cozy is Tiger Beat material.  They are a throw back that sounds like they have their teen years studying Gary Glitter deep cuts.  They sound like they feel comfortable in denim and prefer hair down to their shoulders.  As I listen to the opening rhythm guitar take from “Cola Shock Kids”, I immediately feel like I am stuck in a crowd of has-been Cheap Trick cougars looking to pounce on a crowd of hipsters. While I continue to play “Cola Shock Kids” over and over again I remain interested in these wannabe teenage heart breakers.

Cozy consists of ex-members of Boys Club and Retainers. They just released the 7” of  “Cola Shock Kids” on Chicago’s Hozac Records.  This is the same Chicago label that helped press and promote Smith Westerns debut release that we have all grown to love.  If you embrace the nostalgia and are a lover of vinyl then you better move fast.  Cozy pressed 475 copies their 7″ that you can grab from Hozac Records.
