Fresh Track: Guards “Coming True”

Band anthems.  Some people love them, others despise the popular ones and stick to discussions on the b-sides.  Me – I’m a fan.  I’m not nearly that indulgent of my own critiques (well…maybe not entirely) to say a song isn’t good just because it’s one of the reasons there are fans buying tickets to see them.  Hell, even some bands that wrote the song to begin with go against them.  MGMT…cough cough.  But whatever your reasons may be, there is no denying that these anthems represent the best part of the live experience – that moment of transcendent bliss nudged along with a few hoppy beers that culminates with the loud wail of sound and fun.

Cold Cave’s “Underworld USA.”  Japandroids’ “The House That Heaven Built.”  Tanlines’ “All of Me.”  Twin Shadow’s “Beg For The Night.”  These are just a few of the memorable ones for me, live or in studio, from this past year.  And with just about a month left, I’ve got one more to add to the list.  The Richie Follin-led Guards just dropped their latest single entitled “Coming True” from their forthcoming LP In Guards We Trust (out 2-5-13 via Black Bell) and it is a no nonsense foot-kicking-open-the-door hit.  Featuring a wailing chorus, Richie hits all the right notes here as he let’s know all about “a girl like you”.  Listen in below.

Fresh Track: Twerps “Work it Out”

Australia’s Twerps fantastic self-titled debut from late 2011 remains one of the most underrated works of the past few years.  After touring all summer with fellow guitar-centric indie rockers Real Estate, the band made a quick trip back to the studio with the results hitting your local record store’s shelves later this month on November 19th.  The 7” release features A-side “Work It Out” along with B-siders “He’s In Stock” and “Recall”.  Those summer days spent lounging around with the kings of the jangly guitar, Real Estate, seem to have rubbed off even more on the Aussies as “Work It Out” is a poppy, guitar-driven treat.  While the lyrics aren’t exactly based on the happiest of subject matters, the drum beat and guitar are more than enough good vibes for an afternoon cruise.  You can check it out below along with “He’s In Stock”.  If you like what you hear, you can pre-order your copy via Passport Label today.

Video: The Antlers “Drift Dive”

The Antlers.  Brooklyn.  Undersea.  Hurricane Sandy.  Drift Dive.  Slowly sinking into water.  The city, or the music video?  There’s something strangely ironic about The Antlers releasing the music video for “Drift Dive” on Monday afternoon while Hurricane Sandy bore into The City That Never Sleeps.  Perhaps they should have waited a few more days so they could show the subways slowly filling up with water under a deserted Times Square, or maybe they were just egging Sandy on.  Either way, you can sink into the gorgeousness of this song properly with the imagery below.  If you missed my review of Undersea earlier this year, you can check it out here.
