Album Preview: Tennis ‘Young & Old’

Husband-and-wife duo Alaina Moore and Patrick Riley were introduced to us in the fall of 2009 when their sensational first single “Marathon” sailed through the blogosphere. I needed more and Tennis served up their listener friendly debut LP Cape Dory this time last year.  The album is short and sweet but managed to float through my rotation through the entirety of 2010. Not only did I find myself falling in love with these simple melodies, but I became owned by their story.

The couple started their band after a 7 month sailing expedition down the Eastern Atlantic seaboard.  This trip inspired the formation of Tennis and subsequently the theme of Cape Dory.  Each and every one of the songs is dedicated to their expedition with songs such as “Baltimore” and “South Carolina” identifying stops along the way.  Tennis was compelling to me because they were fresh, simple and they carried a story.  They are captains of their careers and I can’t wait to see where they take us in 2012 and we have already received a glimpse of the beginnings.

Tennis is set to release Young & Old on Valentine’s Day.  First single “Origins” has been blowing up the Sirius Satellite airwaves and been floating through countless blogs. Listen below. Tennis will be playing at Radio Radio on February 27th. Tickets are $10. Make sure you pay close attention to this release. They will likely provide us with another tale.  Maybe not nautical, but certainly notable.

Blue Moon Revue: New Video + Album Release Party

Indianapolis’ Blue Moon Revue released a hot new video for the track “Lil Momma” off their latest release Phases today. The eye candy comes courtesy of local video gurus Monkey Eats Monkey. The band will be playing at Radio Radio tonight for their 5th Annual Holiday Extravaganza. In the past, BMR has filled up venues in the Broad Ripple area for one of the Christmas season’s best parties. This marks the first time the event will be held in Fountain Square.

This year’s holiday show will also serve as an album release party. BMR is sounding as good as ever at the moment. The band has been steadily sharpening their sound at Alan Johnson’s Static Shack Studios. Johnson is a seasoned studio veteran, who is responsible for Bob and Tom’s extensive catalog of albums. On top of recording and mixing Phases, Johnson has had BMR rehearsing into the wee hours for weeks. The hard work and long rehearsals should make for a terrific show at Radio Radio tonight. Cover for the event is $6, or $3 with a canned food donation for Gleaners Food Bank. Fellow Indy natives Genius Johnson will be on hand to lend support. Come out and support great local music tonight, and witness a band that is coming into their own.

Photos: An Evening with Alabama Shakes

Last week, MOKB Presents brought the Alabama Shakes to town for a sold out show at Fountain Square’s Radio Radio. Local photographer and friend of the blog Matt Beuoy was on hand to capture a few moments from the special performance. The up-and-comers treated fans to 7 or 8 new tracks beyond the four songs from their debut self-titled EP. Matt has a sharp eye and we’re hoping to drag him out to document more shows in the future. Click on the thumbnails to see their full-size. We hope you enjoy!
