Video: Dirty Beaches LaundroMatinee Session
Back in September, Alex Zhang Hungtai, known by his stage name Dirty Beaches, visited Indianapolis for a MOKB Presents show at White Rabbit Cabaret. The Taiwanese-born Canadian resident is a multi-instrumentalist known for his unique, genre-bending sound. A month after his show at The Rabbit, the good folks at LaundroMatinee released a pair of videos. Album Stream: mr. Gnome ‘Madness in Miniature’
While the White Stripes are no longer active, the boy + girl two-piece formula still lives on in Cleveland’s mr. Gnome. They bring a sense of distorted, psychedelic mystery to their sound. A rugged, unpolished rhythm seems consistent in all of their work, but the persistent uncertainty looms as I listen to their latest release on El Marko Records, Madness in Miniature. Listen:
Singer/guitarist Nicole Barille and drummer Sam Meister produce mood swings that, at times, make me feel like I am stuck in the mind of Donnie Darko. Even their album artwork mimics a character that might have been responsible for the take over of Darko’s mind. While the Stripes gave all of their fans a sedative when they announced their retirement this year, bands like mr. Gnome continue to provide wild delusions for supporters of this formula.

IPR’s “The Scene” to Feature The Bonesetters

Any time I get the opportunity to promote one of my favorite local bands I will capture the moment. The Bonesetters have been nothing short of brilliant for those of us watching. Their ability to continually get gigs while being proactive in the social media community is extremely developed for a local indie band. Lead singer, Dan Snodgrass is not only extremely talented as a musician, but also admirably talented when it comes to engagement. Snodgrass promotes his band, shares video clips of songs he loves, and shares his opinions on certain local topics. He understands his ability to self-market with free tools and executes. He is a bonafide marketer who just happens to front a great band and has amazing writing skills coupled with a Jeff Buckleyesque inflection.
Thought on Tracks friends The Bonesetters will be on Indiana Public Radio’s The Scene on Saturday, December 3 at 10 p.m. with Chicago’s Santah. This performance was recorded live at the now defunct Vollrath Tavern in Indianapolis.
Congratulations to the Bonesetters on a flawless year of music from a local standpoint. Let’s hope 2012 gets you guys recognized on the national stage. You deserve it.
