The Lumineers Break in Do317 Lounge

Friday marked the beginning of a fresh addition to the music scene in Indianapolis, the opening of the Do317 Lounge.  Do317 owners Josh Baker and Craig “Dodge” Lile along with the LaundroMatinee team and many others are to thank for this new space in Indianapolis.  The room sits a top the Murphy Building off Virginia Avenue, right in the heart of Fountain Square.

Opening day for the lounge brought a private show by Denver band, The Lumineers.  The band offered a four-song set sandwiched in between their sold-out Thursday and Friday shows at Radio Radio.  While the band highlighted some of their more “popular” songs, b-side track “Morning Song” played well to the intimate setting.  Free samples from Upland Brewery along with photo opportunities with the band helped add to the private experience.

The Do317 Lounge is another sign of growth for the music scene in our great city.  I continue to notice many new faces at live shows and feel a growing excitement to the acts that come through Indianapolis.  Sold out back-to-back shows indicate that Indianapolis is getting ready to burst at the seams as we continue to grow as a legitimate stop for bands passing through.  Keep your eyes glued to Do317 for your next opportunity to check out the new space and show your appreciation for those who keep the ship sailing here in Indianapolis.

Fresh Track: Voodoo Sunshine “Bad Hangover”

If you live in Indianapolis, chances are you’re suffering from a wicked case of “The Tuesdays” this morning. We’ve just gotten through what the rest of the country refers to as Memorial Day weekend. Around here, the aforementioned marathon is known simply as “race weekend.”  Many Hoosiers spent their 3-day siesta surviving record high temperatures, the deafening roar of open-wheel engines and guzzling enough cheap beer to drown a large sorority.

On Friday, Indianapolis natives Voodoo Sunshine ushered in race weekend by celebrating the release of their debut EP Somethin to Say at Locals Only. The band blends classic rock, funk and a bit of So-Cal punk à la Red Hot Chili Peppers to form a sound that packs a muscular punch suitable for a soundtrack of Speedway debauchery. Their song “Bad Hangover” serves as an appropriate starting point to the Tuesday after the track. Download the entirety of Somethin to Say for free at Voodoo Sunshine’s website.

Tonight: The Bears of Blue River at White Rabbit Cabaret

Spring is in full swing and summer is just around the corner. As sunshine and warm weather become the norm, the weekend has a tendency to creep into the work week.  Beers on a patio prove more mandatory than tempting when the temperature hits 75 and a light breeze is afloat. Tonight, White Rabbit Cabaret offers Indy residents a particularly tantalizing reason to venture out.

We have grown quite fond of Chicago’s The Bears of Blue River around these parts. Their album Dames is one that I’ve kept in steady rotation since it dropped last October. The folk-driven release has gained some traction, as the band recently laid down their second Daytrotter session. Hoosier ties run deep here.  Richard Edwards of Margot and the Nuclear So and So’s handled pre-production responsibilities, while Tyler Watkins (producer of The Bonesetters SAVAGES!) served as engineer on Dames. Watch as The Bears of Blue River competes with the sounds of Brooklyn’s night life on an unplugged rendition of “Blue Ribbon” below.

Up-and-coming Bloomington, IN band Chandelier Ballroom will be on hand as support. Their debut EP Long Division was one that caught our attention last year. The band combines synthesizer, heavy bass and the vocal prowess of lead singer Steven Elmlinger for a psychedelic blend of lo-fi, alt rock. Listen to their latest track “Organs” below.

Winter may have been mild this year, but Indy’s best evenings are just starting to hit their stride. Don’t sleep on what is certain to be a memorable night of music at White Rabbit Cabaret. Indianapolis’ own Great Future will round out the formidable cast of characters.  Tickets to the show are a mere $5. What do you have to lose?
