Video: Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros “Man on Fire”

Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros recently stopped by the Minnesota public radio station, 89.3 The Current, for a live studio performance. The cast of characters formed a circle and got down for a country-infused knee-slapper in the form of new song “Man on Fire.” The song kicks off the band’s new full-length, Here, released just last week. The track feels like a double take on the Johnny Cash classic of the same name. Sharpe and squad also performed “Also Wash Out” and “That’s What’s Up”, both also off the new record.

Band to Watch: TEEN

Were the world a rational place, 2012 might very well have been a dark year for Teeny Lieberson. Since her departure, longtime Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich has taken Lieberson’s former band, Here We Go Magic, under his wing. Under his guidance, the band released its most critically acclaimed album to date in the form of A Different Ship. Fortunately for listeners, logic is a rare bird in this world of ours. Rather than wallow in what might have been, we find Lieberson fast at work on her aptly titled female group TEEN.

Brooklyn-based TEEN features  Lieberson’s sisters Katherine and Lizzie on percussion and keys respectively, along with longtime friend Jane Herships on bass and Maia Ibar on drums. Each member of the band sings, and they sing well. Last year, TEEN independently released a four-track EP entitled little doods. The debut kicks off with the catchy hook of “Cannibal”, featured below.  Though I’m just as smitten with the sleepy, scorned love of “Just Another” and rattling, lo-fi drone of closing track “Ocean Pearl.”

Since releasing little doods, TEEN has spent the better part of the last year carving out an identity. They have shared the stage with Thought on Tracks favorites Caveman, Gauntlet Hair and Purity Ring among others. On August 28, TEEN will release its debut full-length In Limbo on Carpark Records. The label recently dropped the album’s first single “Better”.  Listen to the .mp3 here, and watch the video via PAPERMAG.  The video features footage from the Kevin Bacon classic Quicksilver and is not to be missed.

Still unconvinced? If you manage to sit through “Come Back” from the Secret Garden video session featured below without immediately transforming into a staunch TEEN supporter, then I give up. The video features four previously unreleased songs, including the title track from the forthcoming LP. When you’ve got a few minutes, click play and refrain from averting your eyes until completion. You will not finish disappointed. If I’m wrong, feel free to call me an asshole in the comment section beneath the post.

Band to Watch: PAPA

Los Angeles four-piece PAPA is a band that I have been unable to put down the last few weeks. My buddy Scott Watson from The Fridge offered the introduction via their stunning cover of Nick Lowe’s “(I love the sound of) Breaking Glass.” This proved an apt starting point, as Lowe’s records have remained in frequent rotation since I caught the singer-songwriter’s set in support of Wilco last year in Indianapolis. PAPA sticks to the script, but why fuck with such a delicious pop groove anyway?

PAPA recently wrapped up a month-long stint at The Echo on Sunset Blvd. Last week, Daytrotter dropped their SXSW session, which also features the cover of “Breaking Glass.”  To say that PAPA is gaining traction amongst the independent music scene is an understatement. Thus far, it appears warranted. The band released their addictive debut EP A Good Woman is Hard to Find last October. The five tracks prove a cohesive batch of vintage pop, with Darren Weiss crooning and keeping time at the heart of it all. Listen to “Collector”

Somewhat of a rhetorical question here, but can anyone name a drummer/singer that is not a complete and utter badass? I’m sure my memory is selective towards the talented, so feel free to shatter this theory in the comment box.  Rest assured, Weiss is one of the good ones. On the surface, PAPA offers concise songs featuring bright guitar flourishes and familiar key changes on piano. Just beneath, Weiss paints these vignettes of ordinary characters wrestling with the same pangs of love, self-doubt and uncertainty of the future that plague the rest us. Even those moments of chaotic, internal rage when we just want to scream, as Weiss does at the end of “Collector”, “I JUST WANT IT TO BE QUIET NOW!” It’s at these moments, when Weiss unearths a bit of humanity that PAPA’s sound elevates beyond an ordinary pop quartet. Watch their video of “Breaking Glass” below.
